UL All-Weather Jacket - Night Blue
Last one in stock!
This is the Yamatomichi answer to the age-old problem of constantly fighting with waterproof jackets that are stuffy and no matter what the numbers suggest, they don’t breathe as well as you’d hope. Instead of approaching the issue in the same way as everyone else and ultimately ending up at a similar outcome, Yamatomichi created a new category with new rules - All Weather Active Wear. This really hits at the heart of why we love Yamatomichi. For years lightweight hikers have been using gear that is a result of innovation happening in mountaineering equipment that then trickles down into tramping and lightweight hiking, this approach often misses the point and fails to ask what the activity is we’re doing and what we need gear to do.
Yamatomichi are designing gear specifically for lightweight hiking and this jacket is a result of that approach. Their collaboration with Pertex, the legendary Japanese fabric producer has given them access to the most premium fabrics in the industry. They’ve combined Pertex Shield Pro which is a highly waterproof fabric with Pertex Shield Air, an incredibly breathable fabric in the areas you need it the most. This unique approach makes it really difficult to compare this jacket with others on the market. It is truly designed around wearing a hiking pack and moving through bad weather. The back piece, sides and underarms are all the breathable fabric, allowing air to pass through easily and help fight heat and moisture build up in these areas. The hood, shoulders and front are all the highly waterproof fabric, protecting you from weather where you need it the most and where your pack isn’t covering. This approach is demonstrated in this video HERE.
As you’d expect, the level of detail doesn’t just stop at the choice of fabric and pattern. All of the Yamatomichi All Weather Active Wear is seam sealed and constructed using ultrasonic welding, which eliminates the need for stitching that creates needle holes in waterproof fabric. There are very few factories in Japan that have the capabilities of constructing garments using this method with the precision required, however this process really increases the longevity of a jacket and can prevent leakage in the future as the jacket ages.
Not rainwear like we are used to, think of it as a waterproof windbreak that suits the humidity of New Zealand in the Summer and shoulder seasons, keeping you safe when needed and much more comfortable as you move through nature. This Jacket version is trying to balance what you expect from a typical jacket, whilst still performing uniquely. The two way zip makes it super easy to take on and off when compared to the hoody, zipping up from the bottom is a perfect way of keeping the important bits dry whilst mechanically dumping a lot of heat. It retains most of the lightweight benefits of the Hoodie whilst adding some clever nice to haves.
