If you've been in to the shop and we've talked about Norda before, it's likely you've already been introduced to this pair. We’ve been selling the Norda 001 for three years now, to people instantly putting huge kilometers into them on the Te Araroa trail. What is consistent and different to other trail shoes on the market is that these shoes don’t fall apart, they just eventually wear out - and it depends how far you are willing to push them.
Take a look at our friend Gerhard's pair. Last year he put around 3500km into these shoes, training for 500km before heading to do the Te Araroa (walking the length of New Zealand). This was Gerhard's second pair of Nordas, after taking his last pair tramping all over New Zealand, from Rakiura/Stewart Island to the Tararua Ranges here in Wellington. We’re sure many of you can relate — Gerhard couldn’t imagine hiking in any other shoe, so he pre-ordered a second pair of 001's to swap into when he arrived in Wellington. I know this might sound crazy but we’d estimate Te Araroa walkers average around four pairs (but sometimes more!!!) of other popular unnamed shoes over the duration of the trail, so swapping out halfway seemed reasonable for Norda.
A couple of months later Gerhard arrived in Wellington and his shoes had ‘plenty of life left in them’, they were feeling like trail slippers and he decided to continue South in the pair he started the trail in. This wasn’t a huge surprise to us. We sell a lot of the Norda 001's to hikers halfway through the trail heading South and confidently say that they’ll last the whole South Island and they’ll have some life left in them. We love receiving the happy messages from hikers at the sign in Bluff saying ‘you were right!’. The year before a TA hiker joined our monthly run club in the 001’s that she had just hiked the South Island in when she was passing back through Wellington.
Anyway, we didn’t hear from Gerhard for a couple of months until he messaged us and asked if we wanted his shoes to show TA hikers next season - he had just completed the whole Te Araroa with a loaded pack in his shoes that had hiked a total of 3500kms 🤯What is amazing is that the shoe, whilst absolutely flogged, is still structurally sound. No snapped laces, no holes in the fabric, with the upper Dyneema® fabric still fully attached to the sole. The Norda 001 is the perfect fit for the Te Araroa and for the rugged tramping here in Aotearoa. Durability aside the performance is incredible and whilst you enjoy the grip and comfort you can sleep like a baby in your tent knowing you are keeping shoes out of the landfill.
